The Engineering Department in Kozhikode Corporation is broadly divided into two wings viz., General Engineering & Project Wing, with the overall charge of the Department vested with the Corporation Engineer, in the rank of Superintending Engineer.  While the Project wing is headed by the Project Engineer (in the rank of Executive Engineer), the General Wing is under the direct control of the Corporation Engineer.

The General Engineering Wing is zoned into three zones; (a) North Zone (b) Centre Zone and (c) South Zone; each headed by an Asst. Executive Engineer.  Each Zone is subdivided into 2 Sectors and each Sector is headed by an Asst. Engineer.  Altogether Six Sectors are there.  The Sectoral works include mainly road works and drainage works in different wards of the Corporation besides construction and maintenance works of buildings connected with transferred departments. 

The Project Wing deals with main capital works of the Corporation such as major buildings bus stands etc. The Project Wing also carries out construction work in connection with Solid Waste Management System.  Besides the Project Engineer, one Asst. Executive Engineer and 3 Asst. Engineers are working in this Wing.  The Mechanical & Electrical works are also done under the supervision and control of this wing. Maintenance of streetlight is carried out by Project Wing.

Apart from this, there is a Drawing Branch headed by a Head Draughtsman and it scrutinises  the estimates and bills of the Corporation.  Also it gives technical support to the nearby Municipalities

The Ministerial wing consists of 2 Superintendents and 13 Clerks who deal with the clerical work of the entire Section.

The main job of the Engineering Department is implementation of all Municipal works mainly roads, drainage, buildings etc.  The Corporation maintains 432 Kms of bitumen roads. The works connected with the transferred departments are also now attended by the Corporation Engineering Department; eg. Schools, hospitals etc. Apart from execution, preparation and budget proposals and formulation of all Plan Projects for the Corporation in respect of Kerala Vikasana Padhathi (erstwhile Peoples’ Plan Programme) are being prepared and finalised by the Engineering Department.  The working group set up for the plan formulation for public works have their conveners from among the Engineering Department.  They have to prepare draft plan proposals for the ensuing year and evaluation of projects for the previous year.  The detailed projects are prepared by the staff of the Engineering Department for obtaining the approval of the District Planning Committee in time.  Other works dealt by the Engineering Department are attending to various petitions of the public, giving stability certificate for buildings, management of flood during monsoon and draught works in the summer.  Mini water supply schemes are taken up in draught affected areas.  The Corporation Engineering Department takes up the MLA and MP fund works also.

Valuation works connected with all acquisition in the city are done by the Engineering Department.
