The Health section of the Kozhikode Corporation is responsible for the following functions:


Ensuring Health Centres and dispensaries wherever necessary, with medical officer and other necessary staff.

Sanitation Activities

The entire corporation is divided into 16 health circles to handle sanitation activities in areas that are part of the corporation.

D & O license

The D & O licenses are issued by the Circle Health Inspectors on behalf of the secretary.


The complaints relating to stray dogs/cattle, cutting dangerous trees etc, are attended by the Health Inspectors/Junior health Inspectors and the files are processed from the health section

Inspection of Hotels and trades:

Frequent Inspection of hotels, restaurants and other trade houses are carried out by a health squad.


There is a JHI deputed exclusively for attending the prosecution cases.

Births and Deaths Registration

At present, the Corporation Health Officer is in charge of the Birth and Death Registration. He/She is acting as the Registrar of Birth and Death Registration. On line registration of birth and death is done by a new concept called Hospital Kiosk.As many as 21 hospitals, both in Govt. Sector and Private are covered under this system (for more details see ‘Information Centre’)

Transport Section

The transport section is now headed by Health Inspector First grade. Two JHIs are in charge of distribution of vehicles.

AMM work

The Corporation is now conducting periodical mass spraying works by using 80 AMM workers, which is found to be effective.

Model Solid Waste Management Project

At present the Corporation is implementing a Model Solid Waste Management Project in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rules 2000. The system involves segregated storage of the wastes at the point of origin itself and segregated collection of the same by Kudumbasree volunteers (Primary collection) using cargo Auto Rickshaws. The same is moved to the secondary collection points and then is loaded to secondary collection vehicles (tractors/ trucks). It is then transported to Nheliyan Paramba where the biodegradable wastes are treated and made in to bio-manure. Non- biodegradable wastes and rejects are being used for land filling.
